Connecting iDEAL and Mollie

Shopify does not show iDEAL in the checkout once there is a subscription in the cart. Loyalo solves that with an iDEAL button of its own and your own Mollie account: the customer pays the first order with iDEAL, the next deliveries are collected automatically.

Updated: 2 October 2026

What you need

  • A Mollie account of your own with iDEAL and SEPA Direct Debit activated
  • The Mollie app in your Shopify checkout, so customers can pay with iDEAL there
  • An API key from Mollie (Mollie > Developers > API keys)

Connecting Mollie

  1. Open Settings > iDEAL (Mollie)Enter the API key from Mollie. With a test key you try everything without real payments. The key is stored encrypted.
  2. Switch on iDEAL subscriptionsChoose where the iDEAL button is (cart or product page), the text on the button and the shipping costs per delivery.
  3. Switch on Loyalo in your themeThe iDEAL button is in the app embed 'Loyalo' in the theme editor.
  4. Place a test orderOrder a subscription with the iDEAL button and check under Subscriptions that it is there with payment method iDEAL.

How it works

  1. The customer chooses iDEALWith the button 'Pay with iDEAL' the customer goes to the Shopify checkout and pays the first order with iDEAL through Mollie.
  2. Loyalo records the mandateFrom that payment Loyalo creates a SEPA mandate in your Mollie account and starts the subscription. The first order is the first delivery.
  3. Next deliveriesOn the collection date Loyalo creates the order in Shopify and collects the amount through the mandate. When the collection succeeds, the order is marked paid.
Failed collection

Loyalo tries again on the days you set under Subscriptions > Settings (by default after 1, 3 and 5 days). The customer gets an email with a payment link; paying through it renews the mandate at once.

Only iDEAL in that checkout

You can set the checkout of an iDEAL subscription to show iDEAL only. Other payment methods are then hidden, only for orders that come through the iDEAL button. Regular orders keep all payment methods. Shopify does not allow this setting on every Shopify plan; the page shows whether it is on for you.

Do I need a Mollie account of my own?

Yes. You connect your own account, so the money comes straight to you and the mandates are yours.

Is Shopify Payments still needed?

Yes. One-time purchases and subscriptions by card go through your regular Shopify checkout. Only subscriptions with iDEAL run through Mollie.

Can a customer renew their mandate?

Yes. In the portal they choose 'change payment method' and give a new mandate with a payment of € 0.01 through iDEAL.

What happens when all attempts fail?

Then what you set under Subscriptions > Settings happens: the subscription is paused, cancelled or left as it is.
